A failed mercenary detained in Minsk

25.08.2022
The Investigative Department of the Administration of the Investigative Committee for the city of Minsk is investigating a criminal case against a 31-year-old Minsk resident.

Following the investigation, the man had been an active user of various destructive Telegram channels. This spring, influenced by false information about ongoing special operation in Ukraine, the rebel decided to take part in an armed conflict on the territory of a foreign state.

To do this, the man found information in one of the Telegram channels about the procedure for registering as a «fighter» of an illegal armed group and informed the chatbot about his readiness to participate in hostilities.

When applying for a «job», the accused boasted that even while serving in the Armed Forces of Belarus he had mastered shooting skills and was ready to perform the most radical tasks.

It is worth noting that in September 2020, the man took an active part in street outrages on Independence Avenue in Minsk, blocking transport communications with his criminal actions. Thanks to the well-coordinated work of the officers of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime and Corruption (GUBOPiK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the man was identified and detained.

It follows from the case materials that at the age of 31, the failed mercenary neither works nor studies anywhere.

At the moment, a criminal case has been initiated against the man under Part 1 of Article 13, Part 1 of Article 361-3 (preparation of a citizen of the Republic of Belarus to participation in military operations on the territory of a foreign state without the authorization of the state) and charged under Part 1 of Article 342 (active participation in activities grossly violating public order) of the Criminal Code of Belarus. He was remanded in custody.

The final legal assessment of the actions of the defendant will be given based on investigation results.

We remind once again that a person who informed state authorities and contributed to extremism suppression is exempt from criminal liability.
