Gomel hosts international conference to mark 7th anniversary of Belarus' Investigative Committee

Representatives of different agencies are discussing ways to improve criminal pre-trial proceedings during the 1st international conference dedicated to the 7th anniversary of Belarus' Investigative Committee on 20-21 September.

Major-General of Justice Sergei Azemsha, Deputy Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Belarus, welcomed the participants of the congress. “There are many issues to discuss. The participants will have an opportunity to exchange opinions, scientific developments, come up with recommendations for practitioners and legislators,” he said. Sergei Azemsha stressed that the further development of pre-trial proceedings should meet international standards.

Gomel brought together scientists from Belarus, Russia, Poland, Italy and Lithuania on 20 September. The participants of the congress will discuss pressing issues of the criminal law, criminology, forensic science and preparing staff for investigation units. The congress is attended by representatives of the Investigative Committee, the public prosecution office, internal affairs bodies, examination bodies and Belarus' leading universities.

“In the 21st century the international community has entered a new phase in its development. We face not only positive processes but also different risks. Cybercrimes, hacker attacks, cryptocurrency, and social media have become commonplace. We should take effective measures to deal with them. I am confident that the conference will become a platform for the dialogue between scientists and practitioners,” Rector of the Francysk Skaryna Gomel State University Sergei Khakhomov noted.

The congress kicked off with a plenary session. The second day will feature thematic sections. The participants will present reports covering different topics – from forensic thinking to satellite imagery to crime investigation. The second day will also see excursions to the Palace of the Rumyantsevs and the Paskeviches. The investigators will sum up the results of the conference on 21 September.
