The Main Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee completed the investigation of the criminal case on the murder of a woman, whose remains were found in the Svisloch River in Minsk on January 2 this year. This was reported to journalists by Ivan Naskevich, Chairman of the Investigative Committee, after his report to the President.

As previously reported, January 2, employees of municipal services found a sports bag with a woman's limbs in it during the cleaning works. Investigators, along with police officers, immediately organized urgent measures to establish the circumstances of the crime, the identity of the person who may have owned the found limbs, including the person involved in this crime.

The movements of the man with the bag were recorded by video surveillance cameras.

A few days after the terrible discovery, a man turned to the police, saying that his sister, who lived in Minsk, had long been out of touch. The investigation group immediately visited the place of her residence. They found in the apartment the body of a 37-year-old woman with bodily injuries, the body clearly indicated a connection between her death and the found remains of female limbs in the bag in Svisloch.

During the inspection of the scene, the investigators found food and alcohol, the packaging of which contained information on the place of purchase. According to the investigation, that day, shortly before the murder, the victim, in company with a man, went into a shop where they had purchased alcohol and food. The suspect was detained.

The victim and the man visited the shop, as recorded by CCTV cameras.

The investigators and police officers carried out a huge amount of work to clarify all the circumstances of the event, analyzed CCTV footage, determined the route of the man's movement.

According to the materials of the criminal case, on December 28, after drinking alcohol together, a 26-year-old man raped and committed sexual assault against his woman friend and then strangled her. This information is confirmed by a number of forensic medical examinations conducted by experts of the SFEC.

Further, in order to cover up the crimes committed, the man dismembered the body in the bath, packed the limbs in the sports bag, which he threw into the Svisloch River near Storozhevskaya Street. Realizing that the bag would not drown, the man was afraid of responsibility for the crimes committed, returned to the victim's apartment, collected personal belongings and fled the scene.

During questioning, the man repeatedly changed his testimony in an attempt to escape responsibility for the crimes committed against sexual inviolability and sexual freedom. However, the accused did not deny that he had committed the murder during the conflict. However, with the totality of evidence gathered during the investigation - biological material research, the conclusion of genetic examination, the results of forensic medical examination of the nature of injuries on the victim's body and others - the investigators refuted the version of the accused that he had not been involved in crimes against sexual inviolability and sexual freedom.

In order to establish all the circumstances, the findings of more than 35 expert examinations were added to the criminal case file.

On the basis of the information collected during the investigation, the man was indicted under Part 3 of Article 166 (rape), Part 3 of Article 167 (sexual assault) and Part 2 of Article 139 (murder involving rape and sexual assault) of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. A preventive measure in the form of detention was applied to him.

The investigation of the criminal case was completed and the materials were submitted to the prosecutor for referral to court.
